DMYTRO KOZATSKYI “OREST”

HEAD OF THE PRESS SERVICE OF THE "AZOV" REGIMENT

Dmytro Kozatskyi «Orest» is a senior soldier, and a head of the press service of the "Azov" regiment.

Originally from an ancient city of Malyn in Zhytomyr region, Dmytro didn’t plan to join the military. Being a creative soul, he was found of photography rather than sports since childhood. He loved history lessons and participated in physics and computer science contests. 

Dmytro studied computer science at the University of Information Technologies and Management in Poland’s Rzeszów. But after the Revolution of Dignity broke out in 2013, he decided to return to Ukraine and participate in the unfolding events. Following the revolution, Dmytro joined the "Azov" regiment and safeguarded the Ukrainian border in Mariupol. Along with his military service, Dmytro enrolled as a remote student to the National University of Ostroh Academy to study political science.

Dmytro has spent 84 days defending Mariupol at the Azovstal steel works and pleading the politicians to take actions. As a head of press office, he kept the world aware of the situation on the plant and demonstrated the atrocities committed by the russian army. His epic photos of the Azovstal siege, is a vivid illustration of the heroism of the Azovstal defenders and extremely hard conditions of their survival. Before leaving the plant into russian captivity Dmytro released the photos and a video of the steelworks that were published all over the world and became legendary, winning him a Grand Press Photo award. 

 

At home, Dmytro is awaited by his 18-year-old sister and his mother Iryna of whom he talks with love and admiration. Iryna is a train conductor who helped evacuate civilians during the escalation of russian war against Ukraine. She describes Dmytro as a complete romantic and a dreamer who sees beauty and the positive side in everything. As a kid, Dmytro wanted to become a military journalist but his family was surprised by his decision to join the Armed Forces. Classmates and professors of Dmytro from the Ostroh Academy admire his dedication to studying despite ongoing military service. They are proud of him and expect his soon and safe return.
