KATERYNA

“PTASHKA”

UKRAINIAN PARAMEDIC WHO SING UNDER EXPLOSIONS, UNDER SHELLING, UNDER RUSSIAN ATTACKS.

Kateryna received her nickname «Ptashka» (bird in Ukrainian) after the video of her signing in the bunker during the bombing of the Azovstal steelworks was published in social media. A beautiful mesmerizing voice in the midst of the siege became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance and undefeated spirit.

Kateryna is from the village of Sosnivka in Ternopil region. She has always been an artistic person: participated in the contests organized by a music school, performed in a local drama theater and organized artistic events in her town. Kateryna graduated from the Solomiya Krushelnytska Art College in Ternopil where she studied academic vocal. However, Kateryna didn’t want to pursue her artistic ambitions professionally, and instead she moved to Kyiv to work at the motorcycle school. Her interest in volunteering for the military coincided with her engagement in a biker’s community and motorcycle movement. She received a paramedic training and decided to dedicate her life to helping the defenders and victims of war.

21-year-old Kateryna became a volunteer paramedic and came to Mariupol after the escalation of the russian war against Ukraine. Before, she has been helping people in other parts of Donetsk region for almost a year. Kateryna was never a part of the Armed Forces, but always was an activist and a member of a human rights organizations.

Her mother describes her as a warrior for justice and an honest person. Because of her believes Kateryna would not always find understanding among the peers, but she would not compromise her principles and was always a defender of truth. Long before being named a bird of steel for her legendary performance at the Azovstal plant, Kateryna got herself a prophetiс tattoo that she designed herself — a bird in cornflowers. She is awaited at home by her parents and her elder brother. Her mother Svitalana promised Kateryna to bake her favorite homemade buns upon the safe return home.
